Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit live at the Halstead Amphitheater, Fairhope, Alabama

The Night Jason Isbell Made a Record Find Me

Some records earn their place on your Quest List. You hear an album, you do your research, you decide it's worth hunting for. It's an intentional process — one of the things I love most about collecting vinyl.

And then sometimes a record finds you.

On September 24, 2026, I drove to Fairhope, Alabama to see Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit play the Halstead Amphitheater as part of the Live at Five Concert Series. Live from the Ryman Vol. 2 was not on my Quest List. But by the time the night was over, I couldn't imagine walking out without it.

A Perfect Southern Fall Night

If you've never been to Fairhope, it's the kind of small Alabama town that feels like it exists slightly outside of time. The Halstead Amphitheater sits in a quiet park near the bluffs above Mobile Bay, and on this particular Wednesday night it delivered something you can't plan for: stars overhead, a cool breeze drifting in off the water, and that particular September air that finally breaks the summer.

It was like watching a concert in your backyard with good friends — the kind of night where you look around halfway through a song and just feel grateful to be there.

Isbell is the kind of live performer who makes you wish more artists played rooms this size. His voice was locked in. The 400 Unit were tight without being showy. And there was this intimacy to the whole thing — no LED walls, no pyrotechnics, just an incredible band in a beautiful outdoor space on a night that couldn't have been scripted.

The Songs That Stayed With Me

A few moments from the setlist are still living rent-free in my head a couple of weeks later.

Decoration Day — a Drive-By Truckers cover, which felt like a nod to where Isbell came from. If you know his history, it landed with a particular weight.

Alabama Pines — impossible not to feel that one on a night like this, in a place like this. The lyric "I was a stranger here until I'd almost gone" hit different under an Alabama sky.

Cover Me Up — the song that closes Southeastern and has closed a thousand Isbell sets for good reason. He played it slow, the crowd went quiet, and for three and a half minutes everyone in that amphitheater was in the same place together.

King of Oklahoma — a deep cut from Here We Rest that caught me off guard. One of those moments where a song you know from a record hits you differently when you hear him play it ten feet away.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Live from the Ryman Vol. 2 vinyl, picked up at the Fairhope show

Picked it up at the merch table on the way out — still had the sticker on it.

The Record That Found Me

I have Southeastern and Weathervanes on my Quest List — both albums I'm actively tracking down. Live from the Ryman Vol. 2 wasn't on the list. I'd listened to it on Spotify, I knew it was good, but I hadn't committed to hunting it down.

Then the set ended, the crowd started filtering toward the exits, and I walked past the merch table.

There it was — the black sleeve with the stained-glass butterfly, still stickered. And after two hours of hearing Isbell play live, I wanted to take some piece of that night home with me. The feeling of a great live show has a half-life. A record doesn't.

I also walked out with two t-shirts and a concert poster. It was one of those nights where you just want every artifact you can carry.

That's the thing about buying a record at a show — every time you drop the needle, you're not just playing an album. You're playing a memory.

This is exactly the kind of connection that makes vinyl collecting so different from streaming. Dropping the needle on Live from the Ryman Vol. 2 doesn't just play music. It plays Fairhope. It plays that cool breeze, that crowd going still for Cover Me Up, that particular September night that nobody could have scripted. The record is a portal.
